Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios (Antequera)
This beautiful church, located right next to the town hall, is dedicated to the Virgen de los Remedios. She’s the Patron Saint of Antequera. It is a “must-see” if visiting Antequera.
According to legend, the image of the Virgin was brought to Antequera by Apostle Santiago (ie James, one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus and the Patron Saint of Spain). As the legend goes, the Virgen de los Remedios protected the city from calamities and was loved. So in 1628 construction started on a church dedicated to her. It was completed in 1711.
The church is covered top to bottom by painting dedicated to the Virgin, Saint Anthony and Saint Joseph. The main altar is one of the most beautiful in Antequera and was sculpted by Antequera stucco and carver Antonio Rivera. Behind the altar is the magnificent chapel of the Virgen de los Remedios, made between 1700 and 1707. Within it is a sculpture of the Virgin dating from the beginning of the 16th century.
It is an exquisite church and is free to visit (times are limited. See below). Note that you should have some coins with you – the lights are activated with a 1 euro coin in the box near the entrance. They make all the difference in seeing this church.
