5 places to live in Galicia and Asturias
Estefania was born in Asturias. In this interview she tells us what makes Galicia and Asturias special…and why she left Spain only to come back and raise a family here. She also tells you her thoughts on the 5 best places for foreigners to live in Galicia and Asturias.
An informative interview for anyone thinking of settling down in Northern Spain.
Hi Estefania! I Would love to hear your story about how you ended up in the Galicia region.
I am originally from Gijon, Asturias, a medium size town that sits on the Bay of Biscay in northern Spain. From my childhood I carry the sense of freedom and connection to nature as anywhere you step out of the city centre in Gijon, you are bound to find an abundance of nature wonders: secluded beaches bathed by the temperamental water of the Cantabrico, old forests walks, ancient Celtic ruins and clear rivers are the signature of this region (it’s often called Spain’s “natural paradise”).
I moved to UK in my mid-twenties and I truly loved it. I lived in Leeds, London and then settled to start a family with my Welsh partner in the beautiful hills of Monmouthshire. When our kids were just 2 and 4, we decided to go travelling in our camper and that is how we found our little piece of paradise in Galicia, not far from where I had grown up.
We always say the place found us and not the other way around. We were staying in an artist’s residence for a couple of weeks when we went for a stroll. A beautiful abandoned hamlet stood in front of us with its stone buildings covered by mossy old slate roofs and typical Galician blue wooden windows. It was love at first sight.
Half a year later we found ourselves moving in and starting a BIG renovation project that will probably take most of our years to finish. The kids roam freely among chestnut and apple orchards, and we regularly enjoy trips to Caribbean-style beaches which are less than half an hour away. Our nearest town, Viveiro, bursts with family life and the squares get busy with children’s games while the parents chill and catch up over a cool (and cheap) beer. This medieval town has a large pedestrian area where walking and shopping is a safe pleasure. The water comes in from the sea creating a little marina and joining the river Landro and its stunning estuary. I feel that I’ve passed on my childhood memories to my children. The walks in the forest, wild swims in crystal clear rivers and evenings around fires have created a feeling of home in our hearts.
Why Galicia? I didn’t know (even being from Asturias) the incredible beauty this region holds, the opportunities the house market offers, and the seafood I missed so much in my years in the UK!

Isobel Cunningham
Very interesting post. Will be checking these places out this winter (in hopes of escaping Canadian winters!)
Frank
Might not be the greatest time of year Isobel, tends to be cold and rainy in winter. I’d recommend almost anywhere else in Spain during that time. This weather guide to Galicia might help you out.
