Why you should visit the Museum of Nerja
We were impressed by the museum of Nerja.
The first thing you should know is that if you’ve visited the Nerja Caves (which is a must-see in Nerja) then your ticket to the museum is free within 10 days of your visit to the Caves.
See our post on the Caves of Nerja
The museum is also complementary to a visit to the Caves because an entire floor of the museum is dedicated to the caves – including a section highlighting the Neanderthals that lived here and did the paintings found on the site (dating back about 42,000 years, the cave paintings are among the oldest works of art in the world). They also have a theatre in the museum where they show a fantastic film featuring the caves. So for anyone who’s visited the caves and wants to know more the museum is a must.
Besides that, the museum covers Nerja’s history which dates from the Phoenicians, on to the Romans and through to the Moors. It has a model of the fortress that stood (where the Balcon de Europa now stands) prior to its destruction by English forces in 1810.
The Museum also covers Nerja’s economy which was heavily based on sugar and mining. Nerja had some large sugar cane mills (there’s one near the Nerja caves which stands to this day). Nerja was also the center of mining in the region, lead and iron being the principal minerals.
Signs in the museum are bilingual and there are plenty of audiovisuals. It’s large, spacy, handicap-friendly, there are bathrooms…they’ve done a great job organizing this museum.
In addition, there is a large basement where they have temporary art exhibitions.
As I say in the video, we were surprised by how good this museum (considering that Nerja is a small town).
The Museum of Nerja is definitely worth a visit.
