The Spanish Beer Challenge
It’s been hot and humid in Nerja. So it was the perfect time to do something different – like have a Spanish beer challenge!
We’re not big beer drinkers and weren’t familiar with most of the beers on the Spanish market. Prior to the beer challenge I also didn’t know that Spain was such a beer country. I was surprised to find out when doing my research that Spain is the 4th biggest producer of beer in Europe (behind Germany, the UK, and Poland).
In this challenge we sampled some of Spain’s most popular beers: Mahou, San Miguel, Cruzcampo, Estrella del Sur, Victoria, Estrella Galicia, Alhambra, Estrella Damm.
Which did we judge to be the best beer? You’ll find out in our video.
But it wasn’t just about choosing a winner, it was about trying our a variety of Spanish beers and brands. There were some surprises there as well.

Estrella Galicia is great, but my favorite (and I’m not a connoisseur) is by the same brewery – 1906 Reserva Especial, actually the draft is by far the smoothest beer I’ve ever had and is the best beer around, in my humble opinion!

We found that we love RED WINE, except when the weather turns! Then we go for Albarino and, in a pretty big way, beer. Our favourite during the colder months are Vol Damm and Alhambra 1907. This was always true until we moved south (from Oviedo to Gandia). Now we find ourselves drinking more beer (no surprise) and more Albarino. Generally I think all beers in Spain are excellent and occasionally I just ask for a cana and enjoy what ever is available.
By the way I didn’t hear a New York PR accent and I was born and raised on Manhattan. However this was many moons ago and things do change.
Thanks Herbert! I had a Vol Damm yesterday, very good (brewed in German style). Haven’t had Albarino wine yet (heard it’s similar to Reisling) but will look for it next time at the wine store.
You’re right, no PR accent for Lissette. Part of it is 20 years spent living in Canada…
Lol, that was a lot of beer that the two of you had! Interesting that Spain is such a large producer. We didn’t scratch the surface while we were there.
BTW, when is Lissette going to get in front of the camera? I could tell her accent is nowhere near J.Lo’s but having lived in NYC for a bit, I’m curious if it’s typical Nuyorican :-))
Thanks Claudine! I try to get Lissette in front of the camera but it’s hard. And she always tells me that I’m “the face” of the blog…but that’s just an excuse. Maybe one day. I actually mentioned that we should have a 2nd challenge where she’s the beer taster – just to see how results pan out. But for now it’s a NO.
She’s not typical Nuyorican. She went to a school where they had strict Jewish teachers. So she was taught right. Then she moved to Canada where she lived over 20 years. So she’s lost almost all traces of NY and her NY friends used to bug her about that…The only time the NY accent comes back is when she gets upset with me 🙂
